Most "free" tiers in AI coding are marketing — 50 messages a month, no premium models, ads inside the editor. Here are seven tools that still let you ship real code without typing a credit card number, as of April 23, 2026.
1. GitHub Copilot Free
2,000 completions and 50 chat messages per month. Tight, but usable for hobby projects. Premium models (Claude, o3, GPT-5.1) are excluded. Available to anyone with a GitHub account; no verification required beyond existing GitHub signup.
2. Cursor Hobby
Limited fast credits (~50/mo), unlimited tab completion, no premium models. Tab complete alone makes this worth installing — it's the best in the market on speed.
3. Windsurf Free
Most generous of the IDE free tiers. Includes some premium model access via a credit pool (~25 credits/mo). Resets monthly.
4. Continue (BYOK)
Open source VS Code / JetBrains extension. Free forever — you bring your own API key. Pair with a $5 OpenAI or Anthropic top-up and you have an indefinitely "free in subscription" setup.
5. Aider (CLI, BYOK)
Same shape as Continue but in the terminal. The free + cheapest path to serious agent-style coding. Works great with DeepSeek ($0.14/M input tokens) for budget runs.
6. Codeium Free (autocomplete-only)
Separate from Windsurf. Free unlimited autocomplete in any IDE, no credit card. No chat or agent.
7. Tabnine Basic
Free unlimited autocomplete, runs locally with a small model. No cloud, so no premium suggestions, but also no rate limit and 100% private.
What we ruled out
Several tools advertise "free trials" that auto-charge after 7-14 days unless you cancel. Those don't count for this list. Same with "free for 100 messages, then you must enter card to continue" — that's a paywall in disguise.
The honest recommendation
Install Cursor Hobby (for the tab complete) AND Continue with a DeepSeek API key (for chat / agent). Total cost: $5 of API top-up every 2-3 months. You will outproduce many devs paying $20.
