Cursor vs Copilot vs Claude Code: Honest 2026 Pricing Breakdown

Three tools dominate AI coding in 2026. We do the boring math you should have done before subscribing.

Three tools dominate AI coding in early 2026: Cursor, GitHub Copilot, and Claude Code. Pricing pages for all three changed at least once in the last 90 days. This post does the boring math you should have done before subscribing.

The 30-second answer

  • Cursor Pro ($20/mo) — best polished IDE if you can tolerate its credit-overage surprises.
  • Claude Code Pro ($20/mo) — same price, different shape: CLI-first, Anthropic models, lower polish but stronger reasoning on long files.
  • GitHub Copilot Pro ($10/mo) — half the price, but paused for new individual signups since April 20, 2026. If you're a current subscriber, stay. If you're not, you can't buy it right now.

For most independent devs in April 2026, the practical decision is between Cursor and Claude Code at $20. Read on for when each wins.

Where each one wins

Cursor: pick this if…

  • You spend most of your day in an IDE and want best-in-class Tab completion.
  • You value the plugin/rules ecosystem (Cursor Marketplace launched in early 2026 and is filling fast).
  • You're comfortable monitoring your credit usage at cursor.com/dashboard — Pro's $20 includes $20 of credits, but the unit pricing changes per model and per agent action.

Watch-out: the Bug Finder addon is now $40/mo on top of Pro. If you used the old free AI Review feature heavily, your effective Cursor cost just tripled.

Claude Code: pick this if…

  • You prefer terminal-first workflows or you mix CLI agents with your IDE.
  • You work on long files or large refactors where Claude's reasoning consistently beats GPT-class models.
  • You want local JSONL logs for cost visibility (the open-source ccusage tool reads them well).

Watch-out: Anthropic briefly tested removing Claude Code from the $20 Pro plan in April 2026 before reversing course. Confidence in long-term Pro pricing is shaky.

Copilot: pick this if…

  • You already pay for it (existing subscribers are unaffected).
  • You're inside a company that gives you Copilot Business or Enterprise for free.
  • You need IP indemnity (only on Business and Enterprise).

Reality check: as of April 20, 2026 you cannot buy Copilot Pro or Pro+ as a new individual user. Free tier still works.

What we'd do today

If we were starting from scratch in April 2026, we'd subscribe to Cursor Pro for two weeks alongside Claude Code Pro for two weeks, both at $20. Total $40 for one month is cheaper than one bad guess. Cancel whichever you don't reach for daily.
