Windsurf vs Cursor in 2026: The Comparison Codeium Doesn't Want You To Make

Windsurf is the closest serious challenger to Cursor's IDE crown. Side-by-side on price, model access, and the ergonomics that actually matter day-to-day.

For two years Cursor was the only serious AI-first IDE in town. In 2026 that's no longer true: Codeium's Windsurf ships every two weeks, has closed the polish gap, and undercuts Cursor on price for some users. Here's how they actually stack up.

Pricing — head to head

TierCursorWindsurf
FreeHobby (limited)Free (limited credits)
Pro$20/mo$15/mo
Pro+$40/mo$30/mo
Team$40/seat (annual)$35/seat

Where Windsurf is genuinely better

  • Cheaper across all paid tiers. Save 20-25%/mo at equivalent feature sets.
  • Cascade (their agent) is more conservative. It asks more before editing, which is a feature if you've ever had Cursor agent mode rewrite half a file you didn't want touched.
  • Better at proprietary stacks. Codeium's heritage is enterprise indexing — Windsurf inherits the best private code completion for less common languages (Verilog, Apex, COBOL).

Where Cursor still wins

  • Composer / agent mode is more aggressive and faster. For experienced users who know when to hit stop, this is a productivity multiplier.
  • Larger plugin ecosystem. Cursor inherits VS Code extensions; Windsurf has its own (smaller) marketplace.
  • More public documentation and community. Cursor has more StackOverflow / Reddit answers when you get stuck.
  • Model menu is bigger. Cursor exposes more model choices including Opus 4.5 directly; Windsurf focuses on a curated short list.

Decision rule

If you've used Cursor for 6+ months and your monthly bill is consistently under $30, switching to Windsurf saves you $5-10/mo and you'll lose ~5% of the polish. Worth it.

If you're new to AI-first IDEs and don't have strong preferences, start on Windsurf Free. If you outgrow it and feel the agent is too cautious, switch to Cursor.

If you're already deep in Cursor agent workflows and your monthly bill exceeds $40 in overage credits, switching is more pain than the savings warrant.
